What exactly is chair yoga anyway?

The practice of chair yoga offered at Vishuddha stems from the great yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar who introduced the chair as a yoga prop, in order to explore the actions in certain poses and make yoga postures accessible to all.

Chair Yoga consists of modified poses (asanas) so they can be done while supported on a chair. Standing postures can be achieved with support or seated, depending on the capacity of the student.  This makes the yoga practice accessible and enjoyable for more people, especially those with mobility issues, recovering from injury, or long-term illness.

While sitting, you can do many traditional postures and sun salutations a variety of twists, bends and stretches working not only the upper body but also the lower body in a safe and supportive way.

Just like traditional yoga, Chair Yoga provides a number of science-backed health benefits, for example:

·      Increased strength

·      Increased flexibility and joint mobility

·      Improved balance, posture and coordination

·      Reduced pain (including lower back)

·      Help with fatigue and long Covid

·      Decreased stress and anxiety and improved self-esteem

·      Reduced blood pressure

Come and join Daniela’s accessible yoga at Vishuddha on Wednesdays 11:30 – 12:30!
